About this deal

That so much of HR practice has been to introduce Fordist practices in all jobs, white or blue collar, and to have done this for decades, talk of my problems being that I’m ‘in the box’ might be due to my needing to live in a cardboard box due to not having a real job that pays a living wage.

The process included a one-on-one meeting with each new employee introducing the concepts and an accountability system that focused on results and minimized “people” problems.Changing other people: If you try to change others, you’re likely to provoke the opposite of what you want.

The things that divide fathers from sons, husbands from wives, and neighbors from neighbors are the same things that divide coworkers from coworkers. I read this book for a graduate-level class, and though the concepts it attempted to address are worthy of engagement, I was unimpressed and frustrated by the juvenile presentation. Through a business fable, this book tells leaders how to get “out of the box”—but you don’t have to be a leader to use the principles to change your life and workplace. Think of a time when someone asked for your opinion on something, and you sugar-coated your response because you didn’t want to offend them. For example, a mother who feels that her son stays out too late might set an unreasonably early curfew for him. Bud viewed the other passengers as threats or problems, not as people like him with the same right to a seat. Whereas before you considered your spouse’s need for sleep as valid and important as your own, you now begin to devalue it.

I assume the story format is aimed to make the read easier to get through and understand, but instead it felt like a local TV commercial with a bad script.A book that teaches powerful principles that I have already begun implementing to great effect in my own life. How you feel toward someone depends on whether you’re viewing them from within the box or from outside the box. I am still skeptical about author's approach to storytelling, however the material and ideas in this book are way too valuable to overlook, thus I give it 5 stars. A company can’t solve problems that are getting in the way of results if the people causing those problems are in the box, or unable to see how they’re responsible. Both Apple and Google state that they ensure that only users who have actually downloaded the app can submit a review.
