About this deal

If I had one criticism of this book it would be that it is too short, if I had two it would be that it lacks Sylvain Legwinski. The Pop artist Pauline Boty reveals she married ‘the first man I could talk very freely to’ ten days after meeting him. An autobiography of Felix White that features interviews with cricketers who featured in games or just moments that impacted his life.

The book covers White’s life thus far, intertwining his personal experiences - losing his mum to MS as a teen - with music and with cricket, chronicling the ups and downs of the England men’s team, and including interviews with those who’ve played the game such as Mike Atherton, Phil Tufnell and Chris Lewis.Through his own exploits as a slow left arm spinner of ‘lovely loopy stuff’, to the tragic illness of his mother, life with The Maccabees and his cricket redemption, Felix touches on both the comedic and the tragic in equal measure. The exploits of Tufnell (another bowler of 'lovely loopy stuff'), Atherton, Hussain et al, are given extra import through the eyes of a cricket-obsessed youth. The cricket links and the painful impact of supporting Englands cricket team is eminently relatable. I laughed and cried and like Felix cricket has been a part of my life (for over fifty years) Cricket is so often a metaphor for life and can be a tremendous force for good (check out cricketwithoutboundarie. It’s a manifesto for anyone who has ever stood on the margins, and anyone who wants to make their mark on history.

Rickie Lee’s stories are rich with the infamous characters of her early songs – ‘Chuck E’s in Love,’ ‘Weasel and the White Boys Cool,’ ‘Danny’s All-Star Joint’ and ‘Easy Money’ – but long before her notoriety in show business, there was a vaudevillian cast of hitchhikers, bank robbers, jail breaks, drug mules, a pimp with a heart of gold, and tales of her fabled ancestors.A lot of my own thoughts and feelings without any of his highs and for that matter (hopefully) lows are reflected in his words. From school-day horrors and mud flinging fun to nights at Liverpool’s punk club, Eric’s, Sergeant was fuelled by and thrived on music. This had a very similar literary style to the Broken Greek by Pete Paphides although it is none the worse for that. Felix has a remarkable way with words that you get a sense of on Tailenders when he's left to talk cricket, but it really comes into its own here.
