Okay so I really feel like I would fall in love with Zhang’s writing, but the lack of characterization makes me EXTREMELY wary. So I definitely still have to read this, despite the problems you had with characterisation (a lot of people found that with her first book, too, but I didn’t really mind…so maybe I won’t have the same problem? Didrik is a forty-year-old media consultant whose misguided efforts to become the family hero render him a pathetic vision of masculine incompetence. Didrik finds himself wanting—but failing—to care for those closest to him; Melissa values individual happiness over everything else; André grows increasingly despondent and angry; and Vilja takes charge.
