We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets. For instance, he is very pragmatic in his presentation of the civilian vessels involved in the rescue. Having survived the retreat to and evacuation from Dunkirk, he volunteered for the newly formed Commandos and took part in their first major operation, the raid on the Lofoten Islands.

If you don't know the name Lightoller you should (you would have if you had read Lord's A Night to Remember), as Lightoller was the 2nd officer aboard the Titanic, the only officer to keep his head and save a bunch of people.

Dunkirk serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers and civilians during times of war, as it represents a critical chapter in World War II.

As usual, there is so much more detail in the book about small episodes that took place in the absolute chaos that led to the great gathering of the retreating troops on the beach as well as many who couldn't make it there who then looked for alternate ways to get through the German lines to escape to the south. Never again, after Mr Longden's excellent work, shall we see the plight of POWs as anything other than unremittingly monstrous. It's the Battle of Britain and 19-year-old pilot officer Archie Jackson is in control of the RAF's newest fighter aircraft, a Supermarine Spitfire. The History of War Book of Dunkirk examines the events that led up to it, how the biggest evacuation in military history unfolded, from the plans and decisions made, to the ships, weapons, and key players involved. What the historian, Walter Lord refers to in his classic study, THE MIRACLE OF DUNKIRK is a series of crises that allowed many components of British society to take part in the rescue of these men. I was inspired to read a book on this topic after seeing Christopher Nolan's excellent film "Dunkirk. Each crisis was solved only to be followed by another, but the joint refusal of men to be discouraged played its crucial role in the miraculous rescue. The Miracle of Dunkirk” is a compelling read that provides a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

So of course Langley joins the Resistance until a friendly doctor certifies him as unfit for duty and he is invalided back to England, where he joins MI9 and helps run the Resistance from there. Superbly written and drawn from richly original sources, Dünkirchen 1940 throws new light on what the British tend to regard as an heroic humiliation but for the Germans was a victorious sideshow. It is the sort of novel, however, which shouldn't be read lightly - there are serious issues to discuss here and I'd expect most children who read it would want to talk it through during and after reading. When the Luftwaffe bombed that boat, he was trapped b/c of his injuries on the sinking boat and drowned! These craft were mostly unarmed and many were piloted by everyday civilians, a number of which were on their maiden voyage with little knowledge of nautical equipment.
