Jumps racing was set to end in Victoria after the 2010 season. [11] In September 2010, having satisfied a limit on the maximum number of deaths among starting horses, hurdle racing was granted a 3-year extension by Racing Victoria. [12] A decision regarding steeplechase was postponed until October 2010 when a program for the 2011 season only was granted. [13] Since 2012, both hurdle races and steeplechases have been approved by Racing Victoria.

Although speaking about England and Irish racing, his distinction is equally accurate for American steeplechasing. He wrote:

That’s how we are with death these days: increasingly, we’re giving it the cold, secular shoulder. We don’t want religious funerals in churches or chapels (none of my last four were), so the numbers have dropped by 80 per cent in the last decade. Bad news for the clergy and undertakers is good news for supermarkets and off-licences: according to the Co-op – which conducts 100,000 funerals a year – 21 per cent of us feel that the wake is more important than the funeral service. Despite his breathless itinerary, Ross allows each church that he visits to breathe, and to offer up its peculiar story. He is no dispassionate purveyor of curiosities: he cares, and cares deeply, situating each church in its history and in the lives of those who love it. The cumulative effect is at once celebratory and elegiac. FEI set to remove all reference to long format CCI in 2009". Chronicle Forums. Archived from the original on 2017-10-10 . The people he met along the way fabulous, and the cats regal. His writing style is second to none and his passion for his subject and the privilege he feels when meeting both places and people is palpable. And yes, I wanted Jamesina Ross to be concerned with bearing witness, because that mattered to peop …

I thought this book was absolutely fascinating. It is full of interesting stories about places of worship both large and small, famous or obscure. As the author said at the recent event, he wanted to make this book about the buildings certainly but also about the people, communities and stories connected with the buildings and about hope. The book is a song of praise to churches and how they can be an touching place of past and present.Steeplechases are run over distances that range between 2 and 4½ miles (3.2 and 7.2 km). The runners jump over a variety of obstacles that can include plain fences, water jumps or open ditches. The fences in chases are a minimum of 4½ feet (1.3m) high and are made of a mixture of birch and spruce. Ross is a wonderfully evocative writer, deftly capturing a sense of place and history, while bringing a deep humanity to his subject. He has written a delightful book.’– The Guardian The name comes from jump racing’s origins in Ireland, when young men would race their horses from church steeple to church steeple jumping any and all obstacles in between. I am as far away from a believer in any sort of religion as one can possible be, but I do worship at the alter of church/church yard architecture and the world such buildings inhabit. So this book was the equivalent to the bible for me. It took me from war art of the 1920’s to water ceremonies at Glastonbury via the matriarch of London herself, St Paul’s.

Ridden principally by Miller’s daughter, Blythe, and occasionally by his son, Chip, Lonesome Glory won just about every major race in America. He won the Marion duPont Scott Colonial Cup three times, in 1994, 1995, and 1997. He set a Belmont Park course record when winning the 1993 Breeders’ Cup Steeplechase by 8 1/2 lengths under Blythe Miller. Among his five other course records, he set a Saratoga Race Course mark in winning the 1995 New York Turf Writers Cup. Nicora, Stephanie. "Long Format Alive and Well in USEA Classic Series".
