Description

Add onion, garlic chili paste, and large red chili: Add the onion and cook for 30 seconds. Then add the smashed garlic chili paste and large red chili slices, and stir-fry for another 30 seconds. Grind together dried holy basil leaves with a mortar and pestle or using a spice grinder to form an aromatic paste (approximately one tablespoon).

Red and Green Chilies: Although Thai Bird’s Eye chilies are preferred, Holland or any other small hot red and green chilies will work. I’ve also used Thai ‘prik kee nu’ green chilies. Prik kee nu literally translates to “mouse dropping chilies” in English. The name comes from their shape. These tiny hot chilies are fiery hot and even hotter than Bird’s Eye chilies. Use with caution or omit if you prefer a milder dish. Adjust the quantity of hot chilies you use based on your heat level preference. A delicious, easy to make, four-ingredient savory and sweet stir-fry sauce. It’s made with everyday Asian pantry staples – light soy sauce, sweet dark soy sauce, oyster sauce, and a bit of sugar to balance of the spicy and salty flavors in the dish. 😋

In Thailand, thai basil leaves are often eaten raw because this increases the active properties found within thai basil that help maintains good health by fighting free radicals (an unstable molecule with unpaired electrons). Benefits of Thai Holy Basil

Basically anywhere you would use one of those varieties of basil (i.e., in soups and stews) it’s worth sneaking a handful of Thai basil into the mix. Don’t look for a “Thai” section at your grocery store though–you will find this on Asian store shelves near the cilantro and other herbs like mint, Vietnamese coriander, dill, lemongrass etcetera). Can I replace Thai basil with Holy basil in my recipes? It is estimated that there are between 50 and 150 varieties of basil in existence; the most popular one for use in Western cuisine is the Mediterranean basil. It is thus the easiest to find.
