Description

I used the Netgear GS110EMS for more than a week, and the switch worked well. I had no issue with it at all. It was silent though it did get a bit warm during heavy loads -- not to the point I'd be concerned. As mentioned above, out of the box, the Netgear GS110EMX works just like any unmanaged switch. Plug it into power, connect one of its ports to an existing network (another switch or a router) and you're all set. I did notice a bit of high-pitch sound coming from it when I used the Multi-Gig port, but only in a quiet room -- chances are most folks won't notice it. So, this wasn't a big deal. In fact, it only made me wonder if I missed that on other Multi-Gig switches. Our standard test suite did not run on this switch because it is the first unmanaged switch we have run. That is something we need to fix in the future. Practically speaking, this switch does not have a management interface. Instead, we loaded ports and passed traffic through the switch trying to hit maximum speeds using a 10Gbase-T NAS as a target. Netgear GS110MX Performance Their response? Nothing. Just copy-pasted the warranty info to me a few times while ignoring everything I said and closed the case.

This switch absolutely sips power. Even at the maximum power consumption on the datasheet, it is still only 1.56W/ port or 3.59Gbps per Watt under maximum load. Adding the management function did hurt these numbers, however only slightly so. Expand your network instantly, and give your devices either 100Mb, 1, 2.5, 5 or 10-Gigabit, automatically Considering there are only two 10Gbps, you can add only one 10Gbps device to your existing network. Netgear GS110EMX Overview

This is a very small unit that measures 236x102x27mm or 9.29×4.02×1.06 inches just like its unmanaged counterpart. The front of the switch has ten ports. Ports 1-8 are the 1GbE ports for the switch. These can also operate at 10/100 speeds for those who still utilize ancient network devices. Netgear GS110EMX Port View Front

Indeed, using a 10Gbps as uplink -- that's when you use it to hook the switch to a router or another switch -- you know for sure that all of its 8 Gigabit ports will deliver the full 1Gbps bandwidth when the switch connects to an existing 10Gbps network. The Netgear GS110MX does exactly what it says it will do. If you just need to stand up a small network that will have a few clients and handle all other features on the router/ firewall, then this works perfectly well. Performance is acceptable. Since the switch is both fanless and low power while having three different mounting options, it is extremely versatile in how it can be deployed.Unmanaged: These are plug-n-plug switches for the home. They do no more than adding more ports (Fast Ethernet, Gigabit, or Multi-Gig) to an existing network. Some support PoE, too.

Advanced QoS (Quality of Service) for traffic prioritization including port-based and 802.1p/DSCP-based As you can see in the hardware specifications above, the switch can do multiple things, including QoS, creating VLAN, Port mirroring, and so on.

Product Reviews

The bigger issue is that statement rules out refurbished products received by RMA (and they know what they're doing, there's a section saying they will use refurb products for RMAs, but makes no mention of any warranty on *those*). The all new GS110MX comes with the revolutionary 5-speed Multi-Gigabit technology built in the NETGEAR multi-speed switches allows your devices to speed past the Gigabit barrier. It is unclear what the problem is, perhaps the switching tables are getting full and causing the switch to crash. Or maybe it does not have enough ram. Either way I do not trust this switch as part of critical infrastructure anymore. The switch certainly has more features than its unmanaged counterpart. A big one here is the ability to set port-based VLANs. Still, this is a far cry from some of the more feature-rich options that we see in this space including the similarly priced, and higher-port count MikroTik CRS326-24G-2S+RM Switch. Netgear GS110EMX Performance

I explained more on Multi-Gig in this post, but generally, these ports can work with all speed grades of the BASE-T wiring standard, including 100Mbps, Gigabit, 2.5Gbps, 5Gbps, and 10Gbps.) The GS110EMX is a compact desktop switch that has no internal fan -- it's silent, more the most part. Port trunking/ link aggregation (LAG) allows for increased throughput beyond 10G or to provide redundancy across the link(s) I have since noted that Netgear has now listed the problem on their FAQ indicating that I am not the only one with this problem. I suppose it's a decent switch to sit on your desk if you can unplug it every once in a while. For me, I am away from the building where this switch is active for days at a time. With no remote management (and I have not put it on a smart plug yet....) it causes some grief First, the two heatsinks are the same as we found in the unmanaged version. These are the primary switch chips which is why they are the same. Netgear GS110EMX Internal 3

Netgear GS110MX Power Consumption and Noise

Gaming: These switches come with some game-related features for wired consoles, including low latency, port prioritization, and Quality of Service (QoS). The underside of the unit shows important facets of this multi-gig enabled switch. As you can see, the switch has a number of mounting options. For the photos thus far, we have had rubber feet supplied with the unit. The GS110MX also comes with a wall mounting kit that anchors to the underside as well. Netgear GS110MX Under With Rubber Feet Energy efficient switches that automatically adjusts power consumption according to the link status and cable length. On the underside, the Netgear GS110EMX has two mounting holes and the label with the default access printed on it.
