When you think of platforms, it’s likely that the standard heeled wedge comes to mind. However, thanks to the early aughts resurgence, there has been an influx in ‘flatforms' on the market. So before one can fully commit to one style in particular, it’s important to peruse all your options – because there are quite a few to choose from, including both bargain and designer sandal options. “The placement of the toe strap is especially critical to keep the foot from wobbling,” says Larroudé. When shopping around, you want to be mindful of the overarching design so that it doesn’t impact the overall wearability. “The most important thing when it comes to making a platform sandal is that the fit is in line with the silhouette and the design,” Marie Nilsson Peterzén, creative director of Vagabond, tells us. “The upper strap must hold the foot properly.” Weight Larroude says that the test of a properly fitting shoe includes the below few metrics: Do your toes fit comfortably at the front? Is the arch of your foot resting naturally? Are the sandal straps providing support? “The fit is everything,” Nilsson Peterzen says, furthering these sentiments. “No matter what material or price level you aim for. The upper strap should fit perfectly to avoid the foot from sliding around. When trying on, look for a pair where the upper strap is placed across the toe pad. Also important is that the width of the shoe should fit the width of your foot to avoid chafing. The ankle strap should be adjustable to fit around your ankle as comfortably as possible.” A few of the things that set good platforms apart from great ones are a comfortable platform base and a well-fitted ankle strap.“Stability is the number one factor shoppers should consider when buying a platform sandal,” explains Marina Larroudé, founder and creative director of footwear brand Larroudé. “The pitch is a good indicator of walkability.” Also known as the shoe’s arch, the pitch is the angle in which your foot will sit on the shoe. For example, while the heel may be super high, the platform in which it's set will determine how wearable they actually are and whether or not the sandals are comfortable. “The footbed is another way we can ensure comfort at higher heights,” she continues, adding that the wider the design, the easier your foot can rest.
