Annie Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art Presents Annie

In the late 1960s Leibovitz's father was stationed in the Philippines during the Vietnam war. It was a tense time for the family, and Annie's maturing political consciousness was conflicted in face of the unpopular war. It was during this time that she first began experimenting with photography, capturing pictures around the military base and nearby locales. She was far from committed to the medium however, she had no aspirations of becoming a professional photographer. I thought about how people curl up together in bed, and I asked them to pose nude in an embrace. They had never been embarrassed about taking their clothes off. There was frontal nudity on the cover of Two Virgins, the first record they did together. They were artists, John had no problem with my idea, but Yoko said she didn’t want to take her pants off for some reason. So I said, “Oh, leave everything on.” I made a Polaroid of them lying together and John looked at it and said, “You’ve captured our relationship exactly.” Annie Leibovitz You set the stage for them. Once they are there, they like to have some direction. They like to be at least told they’re doing all right. I forget that from time to time. A lot of my work is post-decisive moment. It’s studied. A kind of performance art. It would be nice to be more spontaneous, but circumstances don’t always allow that. Nevertheless, as prepared as you are for one thing, you hope that something else will happen too. Ilnytzky, Ula (September 5, 2009). "Debts closing in on photographer Annie Leibovitz". Deseret News. Demi Moore, pregnant and nude, followed by a body painting shoot, Whoopi Goldberg in a bathtub of milk, and Sylvester Stallone appearing nude in a pose inspired by Rodin's "The Thinker" are among the most remembered celebs to grace the cover. Known for her ability to make her sitters become physically involved in her work, another of Leibovitz's most famous portraits is of the late artist Keith Haring, who painted himself like a canvas for the photo.
