I have an electrical tester pen that someone bought for me, but I think it would be easier to just have the screwdriver that would be an all in one fix.

Plug-in circuit analyzers are inexpensive, easy-to-use testers that can tell you a great deal about the functions of a circuit when you plug them into an electrical outlet. These devices are designed to test grounded outlets that have three slots. They can't be used on older two-slot outlets. This looks ideal for a household starter set - multimeter, voltage indicator and dedicated continuity tester, all in a handy case:

How much does a good tester screwdriver normally cost? The article talks about them having a flat head. Can you get ones with Philips heads? It would be even better if you could get ones with interchangeable heads, but I'm not sure if that would compromise the purpose of the tool. The reason it didn't work was probably because it got fried using it on an electrical outlet. The ones for cars are usually just meant to be testing circuits in the 12 volt range. Indoor outlets are 120 volts or more.

Line is about 230V RMS to earth, which is why when you touch the screwdriver to it, and complete the circuit with your body, current flows through the screwdriver and through your body to earth. Right now the English specs are still lurking on the Internet Time Machine from when Beha was an independent company: Unfortunately, the screwdrivers never have any sort of labeling on them, so if you didn't know from the beginning that is was for cars, there wasn't really a lot you could do to save it. They are not good devices - as you are starting out don't develop bad habits, throw the thing away and get a proper 2-lead voltage indicator. A continuity tester is an inexpensive battery-powered device that has a probe at one end and a cord with either an alligator clip or another probe at the other end. You touch each end at two points along an electrical path. And if a light is illuminated on the body of the tester, it means you have completed a circuit. Some units also make sounds if there is a complete circuit.Circuit analyzers have no batteries; they simply plug into the outlet to perform the test. The outlet must have power for the tester to work. At first I didn't even know what it was, but I finally looked it up online and found it. Even when I put it into a circuit that I knew had a charge, it didn't light up. I changed the battery and still didn't have success. I never did figure out why, but I finally just tossed it out.
