Edit: It does initially present very strongly, however only lasts on me for about an hour or so, surprisingly. I do have to reapply a few times during the day. My skin is a horrible gobbler of fragrance, it's what I have to deal with. Even with some of the so-called heavy hitters, there's no guarantee with me they will act like that on my skin, it's all trial and error. Sigh. Still love this though. I remember when G. was popular and expensive, too. Now it's very affordable. Some reviewers have mentioned how G. is emblematic of the 80's. Very true, and yet G. has something to offer to the current generation of frag lovers. I'm of an age when I remember when this came out. Giorgio was a part of my high school rotation. A monsterously suffocating collection of sweet white florals that made me smell sexy in my mind. The spray was so suffocating, I used to decant this into a dabber bottle (a frightening process requiring airing out my room and much hand scrubbing). Oh yes, Giorgio! This was popular when I was in High School in the late 80s. A loud, floral, fruity bomb, much different and louder/stronger than the fruity- florals of today. I remember the advertising for this, it wasn't sold in regular stores at first so you really had to have money and access to get your hands on this.

The fact that is inexpensive and you can find it in drugstores, doesn’t make it “cheap” smelling, but subject to snobby people and such attitude is a real shame. The notes are very well blended and balanced. The difference between Red and anything else I own is that the base is heavy. Most all of the frags I own have a toned down, smooth, and sometimes creamy base. Again, no surprise given the number of notes in each of Red's category. It is quite lovely. To my inexpert nose Red for Men has an elegant aromatic theme with subtle spices and floral notes, on a resinous, leathery amber foundation. Like vintage Giorgio for Men of the same era, the impression is high quality and almost niche. Red for Men smells somehow Italian, reminiscent of one of those intricate fragrances by Florentine artisan perfumers with hundreds of ingredients. Performance and longevity are above average. The store had a reading room, pool table and oak bar, so that men could amuse themselves while the women shopped. [2]

The fragrance comes with a ton of happy memories including my older sister tried to hide her mini bottle from me in her room, probably the only time we spoke in delight ha ha we laughed about its x rated properties that bottle went MIA later. The scent memories, just like the fragrance. Giorgio was never known for its innocence -that peach note maybe was to smooth out the notes? I doubt it really bc peach note was in everything then. Giorgio Beverly Hills no longer exists but it was the pioneer in making Rodeo Drive a well-known luxury shopping district. Now, why does she terrify me so? There are a few reasons….I’ll probably cry (as I associate her with that wonderful time in my life…of being madly in love, with the ONLY man that I’ve ever truly loved), and because of the memory of how insanely STRONG I recall that she was. I have become more sensitive to certain things, even things I once loved (but can absolutely no longer tolerate). I fear that Ms. RED could be a very real migraine threat to me now. To smell her again, may leave me in a puddle on the floor, sobbing AND with a MIGRAINE to boot. I wore it yesterday, and left my skirt hanging over my bed. Well the window was open a cool breeze was flowing in. So I kept getting whiffs of this really fresh fragrance?!

It's surprising to see the supposed notes all lined up above, for the most part, notes that I usually enjoy, but in "Red"... well, no. The scent itself is a heady, swirling mist full of florals and incense and amber and spices. It is just just sweet enough to keep it from being bitter but it is not a "sweet" perfume. This is old school glamour and elegant, if applied with a light touch. I only bought it an hour ago and have already gotten two unsolicited compliments. I absolutely love this but I love unapologetically big fragrances. Lightly applied, this is perfectly wearable, even in enclosed spaces (light as in spray in the air and walk through)! At home, though, I intend on drenching myself in RED's mysteriously womanly glory.

Giorgio is gorgeaus! It opens with a bright fresh punch of what I describe as yellow. Then it mellows down to a powdery white flower with a zest of ylang ylang. The oakmoss instead of giving that vintage vibe here, serves only has a creamy base for the flowers. This is a perfect signature frangrance, fits all seasons and can be used for day (light hand) or night (4 sprays tops). This original bottle is the quintessential "All American" fougere. How did I come to this conclusion? Giorgio Beverly Hills was instantly recognized around the world by 1991. Status labeling. Red contains the one note that is truly American. The sequoia note that had never been used before Red for Men. This grabbed some attention in the media. I have wanted to try this for a while, but the only store around that has this had no bottles designated as testers (which is ironic because the bottles they have for sale are testers). I had to return a faulty bottle of another fragrance for credit and it just so happened to cost exactly the same price, so after a quid pro quo swap I left the store. As usual I couldn’t wait to get home to try it so I put some on in my car before I turned on the engine. Now, I never did wear RED that often, in fact, I probably could count on one hand, the number of times I reached for her and gave her a go in the first 6 months that I had her. She was the STRONGEST and LOUDEST perfume that I had EVER smelled at that point in my life (and I came of age in the ‘80’s people..so that’s sayin’ somethin’! LOL).
