Herbert Maurice William Weedon was born in East London in 1920, the son of a Tube driver, an amateur singer with a collection of hillbilly records. Rhapsody in Blue received its première in a concert entitled 'An Experiment in Modern Music' held on the 12th February 1924 in the Aeolian Hall, New York, by Paul Whiteman and his band with Gershwin playing the piano. Born in East Ham, London, top guitar star Bert Weedon wanted to play the guitar from his very early childhood.

However, I do know of a player who died 2 or 3 years ago who was the absolute undisputed master of the particular style and technique you refer to. I'm entirely to blame for my own lack of playing skills, and if the OP was honest they'd accept the mantle of responsibility for one's own actions and inactions too.His first chart hit in 1959 Guitar Boogie Shuffle began a path that saw him becoming a major influence. However, now that I have had an opportunity to delve through this book in conjunction with others, at times when I have had the need to find answers to questions, I realise that it is probably my most valuable teaching aid. Apparently "play in a day" reads as twenty four one hour lessons - so you can take as long as you like finishing off the book! After just the first 25 minutes video tuition a complete beginner with nay six stringguitar will be able to join in with Bert Weedon and his group and play their first tune. May once referred to Weedon as the "Guitar Wizard" and "a legend", while in a 1970s interview Clapton said: "I wouldn't have felt the urge to press on without the tips and encouragement that Bert's book Play in a Day gives you.

Married to Maggie Weedon, he had two sons, Lionel and Geoffrey, eight grandchildren, and a great-grandson. An essential chord dictionary that every guitarist should have in their gigbag, it contains basic major/minor chords for the beginner through to extended/jazz chords for the advanced player. Highly regarded for his versatility, Bert’s glittering career (including being voted Britain’s top guitarist nine times!Although this of course proves nothing, it does seem to suggest that the vast majority of those players who have been innovators and major influences in that vast field of music where blues, rock and jazz intermingle did or do, at one time or another, employ the thumb over LH technique. Former jazz and danceband guitarist Bert Weedon will always be remembered as the most important and influential British guitarist of all time, for the multi-million-selling guitar tutorial which he'd written and published in 1957, Play In A Day. It was back in the 80s, when I was on holiday with my family at a slightly up-market holiday camp in Suffolk that I got to see Bert Weedon.

He also worked as a session musician on many early British rock and roll and other records for artists such as Marty Wilde, Tommy Steele, Billy Fury, Adam Faith and Kenny Lynch, and worked as an accompanist to visiting American singers such as Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and Nat King Cole. Don't think this is it: you're now a guitarist fit to battle Edward van Halen, Jeff Loomis, and countless others who are true exponents. Packed with tunes from all styles of music for the beginner/intermediate player, and suitable for both electric and acoustic guitar players. Bob Shipway… My first guitar tutor book and it felt old fashioned even then… but, as the saying goes, I didn’t judge the book by its cover! His playing style focused on both rhythm and melody, and was influenced by the jazz guitarists of the 1950s, notably Les Paul.

If it won't go there we learn to accommodate our failings until, after thought and practise, a tuneful and painless compromise is reached. Although the video focuses primarily on Dr John, Eric does take a solo and every shot of his LH provides overwhelming evidence that during this performance at least, he somehow managed to shake off the "major influence" that Bert Weedon's teaching had on his LH technique, and play thumb over. Well, in response to Nick's B B King vibrato challenge, I haven't played that particular style since about 1969 when, armed with a Hofner Club 60 (yes, the very same make that Weedon endorsed) complete with a "BLUESKING" logo that I stuck on the raised pickguard after seeing something similar in a photo of B B (I was just a young kid after all), a couple of friends and I would jam on B B King favourites such as "Rock Me Baby" on a Saturday afternoon before heading off to the school disco. In his teens during the 1930s, he led groups such as the Blue Cumberland Rhythm Boys, and Bert Weedon and His Harlem Hotshots, before making his first solo appearance at East Ham Town Hall in 1939.Where I found it invaluable, and I could find this nowhere else in a simple form, was in getting to grips with Sharps and Flats for 'open' notes. More than an hour after his show he was still signing autographs and talking with many fans, young and old. His name is B B King and I just happen to have in front of me a 1993 copy of Ralph Denyer's The Guitar Handbook open at a photo of B B. Pick A Chord follows the ethos of Weedon's hugely influential Play In A Day book and DVD, giving guitarists the tools needed to start playing from day one. Some will be put off by the undoubtedly old-fashioned style - but with the heritage it has you have to respect it, and it makes it a valuable tool even for more experienced guitarists to get inside the heads of their heroes (or their heroes heroes, or heroes heroes heroes.
