This book is a perfect remedy for anyone who is suffering from Studio Ghibli withdrawal and needs to be immersed in a spectacularly detail-rich world immediately. nura and the rest of the kids in the mica mines risk their lives everyday to earn a little bit so that they can provide extra for the family. It’s a compelling read and interesting with how colourful and amazing the jinn world seems at first, and it’s a story I’m sure I’ll enjoy reading again. He’s anxious and cautious but his bond with Nura is heartwarming, supporting each other through thick and thin.

I can't tell you how wonderful it felt to read a children's book with the protagonist drooling for gulab jamuns. Nura has worked all her life in the mica mines, earning just enough to keep her family afloat – and to enjoy the odd delicious gulab jamun from the market. She is determined to find a legendary treasure known as ‘The Demon’s Tongue’, and thus provide respite to her widowed mother and four younger siblings from the drudgery of poverty and struggle. She focuses on stories close to her heart, evoking cultural and societal conversations through her works.when nura’s excitement caused the collapse of the mica mine, she along with the rest of the kids were transported into another world, into a luxury hotel with jinn roaming freely.

The narrative is fast paced and full of action, and with a wealth of lyrical imagery, this superb fantasy shines like the mica glistening in the sunlight that Nura mentions as the story starts. Nura is determined to find a special treasure known as the Demon’s Tongue which is rumoured to be hidden in the mines. In all honesty, I couldn’t believe such a heavy yet light story could be contained in the span of 270 pages but Maeeda Khan really delivered it! M.T Khan smoothly combines the commentary on child labor and the continual cycle of exploitation into the world of the Jinn.

I won’t get into spoilers so the only thing I will say is that a lot of the circumstances are very similar to our world. I managed to predict a couple of things before they were revealed, but I doubt many children reading this will. The juxtaposition between the bright, colorful world of the Jinn while hinting at the darker undertones of child labor was done in such a brilliant way. female lead; it is also a story about friendship, family and finding that working together is the way to make things happen. The atmosphere is bright and colourful but the realistic undertones are not to be missed among the glitters. The setting and the background are just so immersive, and I loved seeing how the cultural details were incorporated.
