We tested 12 foot massagers in our Lab to determine the best ones for regular, therapeutic use at home. We also spoke to two experts in podiatry and orthopedics to discuss what to look for in foot massagers. Our testers set up each device and tried them out according to the manufacturer's instructions. The testers all used each foot massager for 20 minutes so they could get a good feel for how an individual massager worked and compare its function to the other massagers being tested. We then evaluated them across five insights:

Delivering an intense but comfortable massage, we love the FIT KING Leg Air Massager for the foot and calf. While it’s less effective for the feet, you can’t beat the circulatory benefits these massaging boots provide to your legs, especially your calves. We loved that the rollers on the bottom of the spa had grooves and motorized rollers for a deep massage that was amplified by bubbles. You can set the temperature up to 122 degrees Fahrenheit, and an easy interface lets you adjust the temperature during use. Since the manual mentioned that bath salts were fine to use, we tossed about half a cup of Epsom salt in—and we left feeling like she had softer feet. The “best” foot massager for you is primarily about personal preference, says Gary Feldman, DPM, of The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics, but there are a few things any good foot massager should (and shouldn’t) do.

At first glance, this wooden roller doesn’t look like much, but people with plantar fasciitis will thank us for putting the TheraFlow Foot Massager for Plantar Fasciitis Relief on our list as the best massager for this painful condition. Where many foot massagers can’t really get to the source of your woes, i.e. the band of tissue running along the sole of your foot called the plantar fascia, we couldn’t believe how well this unassuming massager worked. Some testers noted that at certain points, they felt like they were getting a professional 15-20-minute massage and appreciated the varied levels of pressure. However, we took some points off overall since we noticed that while the massager applied a lot of pressure to the front of the foot, the heels and arches weren't getting the same love.

the manufacturer’s directions: Different machines have different features and suggestions for use. Make sure you pay attention to the instructions. Going to the salon once or twice a month for a pedicure may feel like a sweet treat, but let’s be honest, your tired, swollen feet deserve much more pampering than that. To the rescue: the best foot spas! After long bouts of walking, standing all day, or even cramming your toes into pointy pumps, giving your achy feet a warm soak can make all the difference. Some foot massagers are intended mostly for relaxation and stress relief. Others provide specific therapeutic benefits, such as improved circulation, reduction of inflammation and relief of pain. There are also foot massagers that are more suitable for diabetics or for certain parts of feet (heel). Consider your needs carefully when choosing. 2. Features Good stress management helps reduce problems associated with hormone imbalances. For this reason, women in menopause may benefit greatly from daily use of a high quality foot massager. We hope this article has been helpful to you in your quest to find the best foot massager. Homedics and Bodi-Tek are the most recommended products on the market but there are a number of other brands that are worth to consider. Which foot massager you should buy depends on your personal preferences, health situation and your budget. Some foot massagers—both the traditional ones and the foot bath styles—come with a heating element that warms up your feet, increasing muscle relaxation and circulatory benefits. You should choose these products carefully, however, making sure that you can fully control how hot the massager gets. You should also be mindful of heating elements if you have certain medical conditions. Heating elements help to improve circulation, says Dr. Weiser, but they warn using these for patients with diabetes that their sensation to feel pain—hot or cold—can be severely compromised. A shiatsu massager is safer for pregnant women since there are no electrical impulses. It can help you deal with the swelling and soreness in your feet. Q: Is an electric foot massager safe for diabetics?

The only people who should not use EMS foot massagers are those with diabetes, reduced heat sensitivity, deep vein thrombosis or a heart condition. If you want this device just for vibration therapy then this massager should work well, however, you may be better off with the Snailax model. While the massage factor was lower (you have to manually massage your own feet using the nodes on the bottom of the spa), in testing, we noticed that this product does have some nice perks: you can turn it on and off with your toe, and buff away calluses and rough skin with the removable pumice stone. Most combined massager models represent an alliance of a roller massager and its compression counterpart. Machines of such type are multifunctional and effective in maintenance.

The only thing to beware of is its tendency to slip on flat surfaces, especially if it is uncarpeted. You also can’t expect the same results as from high and mid-range foot massagers. Read our full JML Foot Massager review. When it comes to hydromassage foot tubs, the main advantage of these units is that they allow you to massage particular leg areas by directing the water jet however you need. As an added bonus, most of them come with a pumice stone letting you flake off rough skin and get rid of calluses pain-free. A good foot massager can prevent fluid retention in legs that is generally caused by prolonged sitting. This EMS massager is designed on the principles of reflexology and is especially impactful on neuropathy. The massager is FDA cleared and is prevalent in reducing swelling and muscle stiffness. In addition to stress management, many other benefits can be derived from regular use of any of these fine machines. There are many good reasons to add use of a foot massager to your daily routine. As we grow older our circulatory system often begins to falter. This can happen for a number of reasons such as disability or illness or even simply a sedentary way of life. That being said, the Medmassager is a lot more expensive so if you don’t need a lot of power or speed levels then the Snailax is a good option. The vibration option worked well but was less appealing to us than the traditional rolling massage feature. On the foot spa side of things, this massager offers a nice, deep tub that can accommodate all foot sizes, but it doesn’t take up much space. We also noted that this massager was a breeze to set up and use, with intuitive controls and smart storage. We felt relaxed and pampered by the time we were done with this massager, and we liked how it combines a traditional foot massage with a soaking spa element. Improved blood circulation supports overall good health and helps alleviate pain. This is especially true for pain in the feet and legs; however, effective blood circulation helps reduce inflammation and pain in general. Additionally, good blood circulation boosts the cardiovascular system and wards off problems such as arterial disease. That said, the machine scored nearly perfect marks in design, largely because of how lightweight it is compared to other similar foot massagers. Although this may seem like a small convenience factor, it makes it easy to store the machine, so you can keep it out of sight when you’re not using it and then tote it to your favorite relaxing chair when you are. If massage devices that knead and roll your feet feel too painful for you, then a device like this one is ideal.
