Aside from the cultural importance of the novel, Armstrong tells a good story - building tension as the stakes get ever higher. In Azzy's case the difference between his internal thoughts and what he is prepared to verbalise is contrasting. I am not sure the book would have the same impact if it was not written in dialect, as for me it puts the reader in place.I’ve often wondered how I would translate this, and I suppose “hankering after the manky” might be the closest I have
come. Would you agree that there’s a certain nostalgia for your time in gangs that comes through in the book?

The Young Team by Graeme Armstrong review – a swaggering

The writing is excellent, the pacing and the way the tension is drawn out in anticipation make this book hard to put down. From the days of sitting in the Orange, watching Rangers win the title in ‘05, that feeling of belonging and brotherhood, the forging of those ties on scorching summer evenings, passing the Buckie round with the tunes blaring. This is such a nostalgic read, one that had me looking back to those days and reminiscing over some of the best (and worst) days with my muckers, ma pals, ma family. Graeme experienced many brushes with tragedy as a teenager: Three of his friends suffered heroin overdoses, one of which he had witnessed at a party aged 16. Then yi come ae age n it’s accepted that yi hang aboot wae them n become a YT wan, oot gittin a smoke durin the week n on-it at the weekend wae the troops n the tidy burds who hang aboot anaw.He gets hurt, his friends get hurt, and the passage of time leads to what was once a comforting drinking spot with your pals, the cemetery, to being the only place you’ll ever see them again.

That doesnae matter but cos time is on our side, the summer stretchin oot before us wae a million possibilities ae love n war, high dayz n fuckin adventure on the Lanarkshire Frontier.

We wur born in the nineties n in the time since heroin hud made it’s mark n is f*ckin hated in the schemes. They just haven’t had the chance at life, or the tools to give them the chance at life, that other people have.

The Young Team by Graeme Armstrong | Goodreads

Although this wasn’t my scene or generation, I still get it and can respect and relate to it in most ways. It's one of the tragedies the book highlights, the extent to which generations of young Scottish men have been culturally forbidden to express themselves or emotionally connect with each other (verbally at least). Award-winning production company Synchronicity Films (The Cry, Only You) has optioned the rights to Graeme Armstrong’s acclaimed debut novel The Young Team (Picador, 2020), which it is developing as a bold and provocative scripted series. Big Kenzie, Eck n Taz appear at the front n somebody shouts, ‘Chill oot fuck, it’s only the younger wans.
